On a field trip to Chinatown in Victoria, BC, thirteen-year-old Jasmine Steele passes through a doorway and finds herself in the Fan Tan Alley of the 1880's. There, she meets Keung, a 16-year-old boy who has recently arrived from China to search for his father, believed to be one of the thousands of Chinese working on the hazardous construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Jasmine joins him on his quest, but soon discovers that they are searching for more than just Keung's father--the white jade tiger, an amulet from ancient times, must also be found.
