Fifteen-year-old Sarah Redmond is a slave on a South Carolina plantation when the American Revolutionary War ends and all the Loyalist slaves, including Sarah and her grandmother, are freed. But as they begin their new lives in Birchtown, Nova Scotia, the first all-black community in North America, it becomes clear that the struggle for freedom has only just begun.
